Windows Backup

Windows Backup is an important first step in the protection of your data on your computer.  This is the quickist way to restore corrupted files on your computer. 
 You have to realize that if you save your backup to your local drive on your computer and your hard drive fails then you will lose all your files including your backups.  
Additional backup protection is needed.

Next option is to backup to an external device i.e. external hard drive.  This would now give you an additional layer of protection.  Now if your computer hard drive fails you would be able to replace your hard drive or computer then restore your files from your external device.

Now what happens if all your computer equipement is stolen or your house or business gets destroyed (fire, earthquake…) you now lose everything?

The next layer of protection would be Remote Backup such as IDrive.  Remote Backup backs up all your important files to a secure remote location.
In this situation if you were to lose everything you would still be able to restore all your important files.

The Windows Backup ( Microsoft Backup) utility helps you create a copy of the information on your hard disk. In the event that the original data on your hard disk is accidentally erased or overwritten, or becomes inaccessible because of a hard disk malfunction, you can use the copy to restore your lost or damaged data. The Windows Backup utility helps you protect data from accidental loss.

For example, you can use Windows Backup to create a duplicate copy of the data on your hard disk and then archive the data on another storage device. The backup storage medium can be a logical drive such as your hard drive, or a separate storage device such as a removable disk, or an entire library of disks or tapes organized into a media pool. Using Windows Backup (Microsoft Backup), you can:

Archive selected files and folders on your hard disk.
Restore the archived files and folders to your hard disk or any other disk you can access.
Make a copy of your computer’s System State, which includes the system files, the registry, and other system components.
Make a copy of your computer’s system partition, boot partition, and the files needed to start up your system in case of computer or network failure.

What is Remote Backup

A remote, online, or managed backup service is a service that provides users with a system for backing up and storing computer files. Online backup providers are companies that provide this type of service.

Online backup systems are typically built around a client software program that runs on a schedule, typically once a day. This program collects, compresses, encrypts, and transfers the data to the remote backup service provider’s servers. Other types of product are also available in the market, such as remote continuous data protection (CDP).

Providers of this type of service frequently target specific market segments. High-end LAN-based backup systems may offer services such as near-realtime transaction-level replication or open file backups.
